Footwear and Industry Museum

Building a footwear museum is a complex task in which it is necessary to think beyond the context and make it accessible to most people outside the shoe world. But Inca has known how to do it. Not only did it open the Museu del Calçat i de la Indústria in 2018 in the former General Luque Cavalry Barracks, but it has also managed to get the space recognized with the Silletto Prize for Museum of the Year 2022. And this implies not only recognition for a job well done, but recognition for a space belonging to the people: inclusive, encouraging, educational, and positive.

The history of Inca is undisputedly linked to that of footwear. Great names, designers, manufacturers, and producers placed the capital of Raiguer on the list of world cities to watch if one wanted to know footwear trends, shapes, and styles. That is why this museum is so important, because it recovers the history and present of a city focused on the conception, design, and manufacturing of shoes, and involves all its citizens, both in its conception and its content. In fact, all the objects and pieces that comprise it have been donated by individuals and companies linked to the footwear world, which were part of the lives, memories, and stories of each of their owners.

A permanent collection of tools, machinery, processes, and results highlights the work of families from the 13th century to the present day, guiding the visitor along a path that was and remains one of the most important hubs in the world.

But it does not just stop at a fixed exhibition; it moves toward visitor experimentation, featuring rooms where hands, eyes, and ears can touch, see, and listen to objects, textures, and sounds during each of the activities scheduled on the museum’s calendar.

Furthermore, there is also a space for collaboration, where anyone can contribute their objects, photographs, drawings, experiences, or memories to fill any gaps the museum might have.

On its schedule, like other great museums, temporary exhibitions related to its theme are also a must. Photographs, designs, displays, or performances surprise visitors beyond the concept of a consumer product or a piece of clothing. Every object has a story behind it, and the museum showcases it with creativity and a spatial concept designed to integrate.
